Tomato Hornworm

I was picking the  tomatoes one day and saw this odd looking caterpillar.  I hate worms and can't stand them but I picked the tomato vine anyway so I can show it to my kids.  My husband researched it on the internet to see what are the white thing on it's back.  As it turned, they are wasp eggs.  This kind of caterpillar is called tomato Hornworm. To better  understand, there is a video below that you can watch.
The video is from youtube, he explains what kind of critter this is.

I have seen a lot of worms, but never saw anything like this. Trust the tomatoes were okay.

Hornworms have got to be the ugliest things around.
I didn't know that they were hosts to wasp eggs. Very interesting.

One year my parents had dozens of tomato hornworms in their tomato patch. They picked off and squished worm after worm. Had us kids not found the droppings and inquired as to what they were, the entire patch would have been devoured by morning.

(I was petrified of tomato plants for years afterward. Thanks for the memory. I'll be watching for them when I pick my tomatoes tomorrow...)

Your photos are great and that's a fascinating nature lesson. Thanks for sharing them. Parasitic wasps huh? Nature's way I know but oh dear. I learned something new today and the video was interesting too, thanks so much.

How interesting. As much as I don't like Hornworms around tomato plants, I hate to see them used in this way. - Margy
